Ivan IV of Russia was the first ruler of Russia to assume the title of Tsar a title that lasted till Nicholas II (Nicholas the Martyr).
Ivan the Terrible (in Russian Ivan Grozny) gained the reputation of being terrible as his reign was infamous for violence, famine and the incident of killing his own son.
