The First estate: Clergy (The Church)
The Second estate: Nobility
The Third estate: Commoners
The origins of the term Leftist came from the era of the French Revolution! At the time of the French Monarchy the French nation presentation in the parliament (Estates General) was divided into 3 Estates*:
The second estate representatives sat right to the king and the left estate representative set left to the French king!
The same seating arrangement kept at the time of the French revolution and till today!
So usually the term leftist is called on the persons that support the cause of the people (usually the lower classes, the commoners).
